Wildflower Wednesday

My Tree-Talk Tuesday posts are being enjoyed by many! I have decided to start a new plant-based series that will feature WILDFLOWERS. Some days spring is in the air, then it vanishes…hopefully, this first post will make it feel closer!

Wildflower Wednesdays will feature fun facts about wildflowers on the FIRST Wednesday of every month.

For the first WILDFLOWER WEDNESDAY post, I am featuring one of my favorite early bloomers, the Douglas Iris.

  • Scientific Name: Iris douglasiana
  • Grows: Coastal to central California and Southern Oregon at lower elevations. Naturally seen in meadows, coastal prairies, and evergreen forest floors
  • Blooming Time: Late winter and into spring
  • Bloom Colors: Blue, Pink, Yellow, White, and Purple (not fragrant)
  • Height: 0.6” to 2.6’
  • Width: Form 2-4’ clusters

I just love the variety of colors, the yellow centers, fading to white, and the pattern of the veining. They are host plants for a few different butterflies and moths, and are generally filled with insects- yay spring pollination!

“In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours”

The 136 different kinds of weather will soon end, and spring wildflowers will begin to bloom. I cannot wait! Embrace the anticipation, and spring will come! Happy Wildflower Wednesday!
