First Friday Fun Facts – September

Fun fact for today…. ABC Isle Royale is LIVE on Amazon!

This book has been sitting half-finished in a folder on my computer for a while. I created it because I have memories of visiting the park. In fact, I think it was the first National Park I went to! It felt good to revisit the project and bring it to completion.

Explore Isle Royale through the alphabet in this educational book. Baby Ranger will guide you through the alphabet and share quick facts about the discoveries made. Did you know you can only get to the island by Airplane or Ferry? Or that there are more than one type of loon that lives in the area? All these fun facts and more in ‘abc Isle Royalle’.

My Experience Visiting Isle Royale:

I had an incredible youth pastor in high school, and he took a group of us to backpack Isle Royale. We had a good group of adventurous people. I am forever grateful for those years. I am forever grateful for the trips we took. Backpacking Isle Royale was an amazing experience that I will never forget. It was one of those places where you want to go back. But, you know it won’t be the same experience. So, you decide to cherish the memories as they are. To those that were on this trip with me – thanks for the memories!

I remember studying the island and doing my senior project on it. The predator-prey monitoring of the wolf and moose populations has always fascinated me. The monitoring began in 1958. If wolf populations increased, moose populations decreased. If wolf populations decreased, moose populations increased. In 2018, 19 wolves were reintroduced to the island due to population decline. Today approximately 30 wolves live on Isle Royale. (If you are interested in learning more Click Here). Though I find all of this very fascinating, I did not incorporate too much of this in an ABC book 🙂

If you get the opportunity to go to Isle Royale, I highly recommend going! You will see moose! You will hear loons! And, you will likely be seen by a wolf, even if you don’t see one! We took the ferry from Grand Portage, Minnesota. We were dropped off at Windigo. We backpacked the length of the island on the Greenstone Ridge Trail. And picked up by the ferry at Rock Harbor.

I wish I had photos to share from my high school trip. That scrapbook is currently being stored at my dad’s house. Yes, scrapbook… this was pre “post everything on social media” era!! Photos were taken with a disposable camera. I had used my hard earned money to get a nice backpack. This did not leave much cash for a digital camera. 🙂 Times have certainly changed!

I hope everyone has a great September! Once again, here is the link for abc Isle Royale.

I’ll be back next month, with more exciting news and fun facts!
